Social NetworksSites And Systems for Real Estate MarketingReal estate agents have generated business through social networks from the beginning of time. Networking is not a new concept for most agents. What has been added however, is the ability to take networking to a new level through social media sites. There are currently 500 million people globally participating on social websites! For example, the average user at LinkedIn is 40 years old, has been in his or her job for 10-plus years and has a household income of $109,000. Forty three percent of the site's users consider themselves decision makers in the family. The number of adult internet users who have a profile on a social networking site has more than quadrupled in the past four years -- from 8% in 2005 to 35% now, according to the Pew Internet & American Life Project's December 2008 tracking survey.
Online social networks are defined as websites where users create a profile and connect their profile to others, whether individuals or corporate entities, thus creating a personal network. Facebook is seeing the most growth among users age 30 and older. Baby Boomers often embrace the notion of making new friends online. MySpaceWith 130 million users, MySpace is enjoying a surge among the 55-plus set, who total 6.9 million users and spend an average 204 minutes a month on the site. AARPIn just one year after opening its social platform, AARP.org has about 350,000 users who have created 1,700 groups and network on a range of topics including Mortgages, Debt and Real Estate. Chris Brogan, president of Boston-based New Marketing Labs and advisor to large corporations on how to market using social networking says: "I call these 'velvet-rope social networks,' people who are connected in a context that matters to them all, like watching the Oscars together online. It's going back to the idea of hitting the bar or pub to talk about something, a gathering place to share group moments. In a world where few people live close to family or old friends, the Internet can bridge that gap."
"It's all being reversed now. Ads won't drive brand loyalty, people will. These sites are where Boomers share their opinions, and those in the corporate world are starting to realize that." ~ Barton Goldenberg, president of Bethesda, Md.-based ISM, a social media consultancy.
"The great thing about social networking is it allowed you to take control of your identity online, so now you are who you say you are." ~ Josh Quittner, Time magazine Tech Columnist.
Social sites are helping people connect on a massive scale, which changes not only how people interact with each other but how they interact with your brand. And that means marketing opportunities for you. Realtors should be using traditional advertising methods but they also need to be where customers are, and communicate through the channels customers like. Customers are on social sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Linkedin. If you want to connect with more people who are looking for a savvy real estate agent, networking through social media makes it easier, or more likely. I'll take that any day!
